Los Angeles-based Scott Healy is a Grammy-nominated composer, producer, pianist and multi-keyboardist and educator who multitasks across the musical spectrum. He is best-known for playing in the house band for Conan O’Brien, first in 1993 on Late Night in NYC, then moving out to LA in 2009 for The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and then Conan on TBS, where he held down the keyboard chair in the Basic Cable Band until October of 2018.  In 2019 Conan took Scott and a trio to Australia for part Conan Without Borders, and in 2019 to San Diego for live shows at Comicon. Post-lockdown Scott was invited back to perform at Conan’s last eight shows on TBS in June, 2021. Scott continues to appear frequently with Conan as part of the band on his live podcasts “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” for Sirius.

As a composer, bandleader and producer, Scott released in 2013 Hudson City Suite, by the 10-piece Scott Healy Ensemble which garnered worldwide attention with reviews, interviews, jazz radio airplay, and a 2014 Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition. His CD release, Live at Kilbourn Hall by Scott Healy with the Eastman Chamber Jazz Ensemble, was released in October, 2014. Scott was featured on the cover of the February, 2015 issue of Keyboard Magazine, and he was also featured in an “Indie Life” article in the March, 2013 issue of Downbeat.

Scott produced Max Gabriel’s (aka Gabriel Judet-Weinshel) 2006 album The Exile of St. Christopher, and Gabriel’s recent singles, “You” and “Sweet Loretta”, and the full album Radio Ocean under the name Unpinnable Butterfiles, released on sonaBLAST! records in September,  2021. Scott co-produced and performed on Lockdown by the Biscodini Organ Trio, released in January, 2021 on Scott’s Hudson City Records label–along with the digital only release of Lockdown was a series of NFT packages sold in March, 2021 on the Ghostmarket platform in conjunction with biscodini.com and hudsoncitynft.com.

In addition to his composing, producing, recording and live television work, Healy works in LA as a session musician in Los Angeles on piano, organ, electronic keyboards and accordion for film and TV. He has also recorded and performed around Los Angeles, across the U.S., and the world with many of the greats in rock, blues, Americana, R&B and jazz: Robert Cray, Bruce Springsteen, Keb Mo, Michael Buble, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Al Green, BB King, Jackson Browne, Levon Helm, Son Seals, Joe Bonamassa, Hubert Sumlin and Tony Bennett, among others. He has worked as an arranger for major label releases, including scoring the big band arrangement for the 2001 Ricky Martin hit “She Bangs”.

Healy’s work reflects his classical piano, composition, conducting and orchestration training, as well as his years in the studio and on the stage, whether it be on the podium, in the band or behind the glass. Other composing, arranging and scoring credits include the Portland Symphony, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, the Mel Lewis Orchestra, Christina Aguilera, and music for film and TV. Other record producing credits include albums by his own groups: the Scott Healy Ensemble, NYC electronica supergroup The Coalition, in addition to jazz piano trio, big band and jazz quintet music.

Healy was a longtime contributing editor to Keyboard magazine, where he wrote a five-year-long monthly advice column, “Session Sensei”, and to which he continued to contribute feature articles and lessons through 2018. His jazz compostion blog Professorscosco explores various aspects of composing, listening, and arranging, and Scott’s new substack Quantum Harmony will include new chapters on advanced jazz music theory and linear harmony. Scott organizes and leads the ongoing Ellington Study Group Los Angeles, an informal workshop in jazz composition and theory sponsored by LA’s Academy of Scoring Arts. He has also taught master classes and seminars at Eastman School of Music, Brown University, CalState Fullerton, Claremont College and Boston University. Scott is a board member of American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC) and has been a featured artist on numerous ASMAC’s live and online masterclasses, and has for three years moderated their online monthly jazz arranging “Big Band Hanginar”. As an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies in the 90’s Scott taught jazz improvisation, jazz history, and led the jazz ensemble at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY. In the late 80’s Scott taught many classes and private students at The New School for Social Research in NYC.

In addition to the Grammy nomination, he has received awards from BMI, The National Endowment for the Arts, and the “Distinguished Artist” award from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio and an alumnus of Hawken School, Healy studied classical piano as a teenager with James Tannenbaum at The Cleveland Institute of Music. He then attended Eastman School of Music from which he received a degree in Composition, studying with Samuel Adler, Joseph Schwantner, and Warren Benson, and jazz composition and arranging with Rayburn Wright.
